\"\"Afgelopen week vierde het Nederlandse IT- channel met een groots gala <\/span>de elfde editie van de Dutch IT Channel <\/span>Awards in Studio 21 op het Mediapark in Hilversum. Ruim 700 partners, distributeurs en vendoren kwamen samen rond Dutch IT Channel, dat in 2012 op initiatief van Witold Kepinski werd opgericht en uitgroeide tot h\u00e9t podium voor de sector. In 24 categorie\u00ebn worden jaarlijks de <\/span>prestaties gevierd v<\/span>an bedrijven die het Nederlandse bedrijfsleven en de overheid van digitale technologie voorzien. Jacqueline en ik mochten weer gezellig aanwezig zijn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bij de start in 2012 bevond de cloud zich nog in een vroege fase. Organisaties investeerden in eigen servers, storage en netwerken in hun datacenter of bij een co-locatiepartner. Door VMware aangejaagde virtualisatie maakte infrastructuur flexibeler, maar bedrijfskritische applicaties extern onderbrengen voelde nog spannend. Rond 2010\u20132012 volgde het kantelpunt: snellere verbindingen, volwassen virtualisatie, de doorbraak van de iPhone en de opkomst van SaaS maakten de cloud mainstream.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hyperscalers legden hun fundament en wat begon als experimentele infrastructuur werd snel het nieuwe normaal. Voor het kanaal betekende dit een structurele verschuiving van hardwareverkoop naar diensten, abonnementen en integratie. In die beweging groeide Dutch IT Channel mee als kroniekschrijver van het ecosysteem. Sinds het begin publiceer ik er mijn blogs \u2014 eerst vanuit EMC, later Dell EMC en sinds 2020 op eigen titel \u2014 en zag hoe infrastructuur het vertrekpunt werd van een bredere digitale omwenteling.<\/span><\/p>\n

Van pieper tot platform<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Om het heden te begrijpen, helpt een stap terug. Begin jaren negentig was mobiele communicatie beperkt tot paging. Bij Ericsson introduceerden we alfanumerieke pagers: geen piepje meer, maar tekst. Met de komst van Nokia en later BlackBerry werd de mobiele telefoon een zakelijk instrument en groeide SMS uit tot standaard.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rond 2010 herhaalde zich zo\u2019n sprong. De smartphone werd het mobiele werkstation, via apps verbonden met cloudtoepassingen. Applicaties verhuisden naar datacenters, werkplekken werden virtueel en data overal beschikbaar. In vijftien jaar tijd werd dat vanzelfsprekend.<\/span><\/p>\n

Consolidatie en afhankelijkheid<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Die groei ging gepaard met sterke consolidatie. Een beperkt aantal Amerikaanse technologiebedrijven bepaalde vanuit Silicon Valley de richting van innovatie. Voor Europa was aansluiten effici\u00ebnt \u2014 maar vanzelfsprekendheid is geen strategie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Intussen bouwde China een eigen ecosysteem op en investeren landen als India nadrukkelijk in een zelfstandige ICT- en cloudindustrie. Europa staat voor een keuze: blijven leunen op de trans-Atlantische partner of opnieuw investeren in een eigen informatie-industrie? Digitale soevereiniteit raakt direct aan economische en bestuurlijke autonomie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Digitale weerbaarheid als kernbegrip<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Digitale weerbaarheid wordt het centrale thema van de komende jaren. De cloud is geen wolk, maar een fysiek netwerk van kabels en datacenters. Wie de infrastructuur beheerst, heeft invloed op communicatie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Daarom onderzoeken landen eigen netwerken en datacenters. De Indiase deelstaat Telangana spreekt met TCPWave over een inheemse cybersecurity-architectuur voor overheidsnetwerken, waarbij buitenlandse leveranciers worden vervangen door een lokaal DNS-, DHCP- en IP-platform. Het doel is controle en operationele soevereiniteit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dit vraagt om nie<\/span>uwe architecturen: een balans tussen mondiale platforms en lokale infrastructuur. Geen terugkeer naar vroeger, maar een hybride model waarin kritieke functies dichter bij huis liggen. Kortere ketens verkleinen afhankelijkheden en maken identiteitsbeheer, logging en monitoring effectiever. Identiteit is immers het primaire doelwit van aanvallers.<\/span><\/p>\n

De slinger beweegt<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

De slinger beweegt niet terug, maar naar een nieuw evenwicht. Lokale wetgeving krijgt meer gewicht naast mondiale platforms. Incident response wordt strategisch: hoe houd je verstoringen binnen \u00e9\u00e9n domein?<\/span><\/p>\n

Net zoals de cloud rond 2010 een nieuwe rol vroeg van het kanaal, vraagt deze tijd om expertise in digitale weerbaarheid, soevereiniteit en AI. AI-agents \u2014 de \u201capps\u201d van dit decennium \u2014 zullen onze werkomgeving opnieuw veranderen. Met alle nieuwe voordelen en gevaren van dien.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Het Dutch IT Awards-gala markeert daarmee meer dan elf jaar succes. Het symboliseert ook nieuwe tijdperken: van infrastructuur naar cloud, van cloud naar platform \u2014 en nu naar weerbare, soevereine, digitale ecosystemen. Digitale weerbaarheid wordt geen keuze, maar een voorwaarde voor continu\u00efteit en overleving. Het kanaal zal daarin opnieuw een sleutelrol spelen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, the Dutch IT channel celebrated the eleventh edition of the Dutch IT Channel Awards Gala at Studio 21 in the Media Park in Hilversum. More than 700 partners, distributors, and vendors gathered around Dutch IT Channel, founded in 2012 by Witold Kepinski and now the leading platform for the Dutch IT ecosystem. Across 24 categories, the awards recognize companies delivering digital technologies and services to Dutch enterprises and government.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the platform launched, cloud computing was still in its early stages. Organizations invested in their own servers, storage, and networks, running them in private data centers or colocation facilities. Virtualization\u2014driven strongly by VMware\u2014made infrastructure more flexible, but moving mission-critical workloads outside the building felt risky.<\/span><\/p>\n

Around 2010\u20132012, the real tipping point arrived. Faster connectivity, mature virtualization, the breakthrough of the iPhone and Android devices, and the rise of SaaS pushed cloud into the mainstream. Hyperscalers laid their foundations, and what began as experimental infrastructure quickly became standard enterprise architecture. For the channel, this marked a structural shift\u2014from hardware transactions to services, subscriptions, and integration.<\/span><\/p>\n

In that transformation, Dutch IT Channel evolved alongside the market as both chronicler and connector. I have published my blogs there since the early days\u2014first representing EMC, later Dell EMC, and since 2020 independently\u2014witnessing how infrastructure became the starting point of a broader digital revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n

From Pager to Platform<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

To understand where we stand today, it helps to look back. In the early 1990s, wireless business communication meant paging. While working at Ericsson, I remember introducing alphanumeric pagers\u2014no longer just a beep, but actual text messages.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the rise of Nokia and later BlackBerry, the mobile phone became a business tool, and SMS turned into a global communication standard.<\/span><\/p>\n

Around 2010, a similar leap occurred. The smartphone evolved into a mobile workstation connected to cloud applications. Workloads moved to centralized data centers, workplaces became virtual, and data became globally accessible. In just fifteen years, this transformation became so normal that we forgot how extraordinary it was.<\/span><\/p>\n

Consolidation and Dependency<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

This growth came with massive consolidation. A small group of U.S.-based technology companies\u2014shaped by the Silicon Valley ecosystem\u2014set the pace of innovation. For Europe, joining that model was efficient and convenient. But convenience is not a strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n

China built its own ecosystem. Countries like India are investing heavily in domestic ICT and cloud industries. Europe now faces a strategic choice: continue relying on its traditional transatlantic partner, or reinvest in building its own sovereign digital capabilities. Digital sovereignty is no longer abstract\u2014it touches economic autonomy, strategic independence, and governance itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Digital Resilience as the Core Theme<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Digital resilience is emerging as the defining theme of the coming decade. The \u201ccloud\u201d is not a cloud at all\u2014it is a physical network of cables, data centers, and exchanges. Whoever controls the infrastructure holds influence over communication.<\/span><\/p>\n

That realization is prompting governments to explore sovereign networks and data centers. The Indian state of Telangana, for example, is in discussions with Hyderabad-based TCPWave to deploy an indigenous cybersecurity architecture for government systems, replacing foreign DNS, DHCP, and IP management vendors with a locally developed stack. The goal is not merely cost efficiency, but operational sovereignty.<\/span><\/p>\n

This shift calls for new architectures\u2014a balance between global platforms and local infrastructure. Not a return to isolated legacy data centers, but hybrid models where critical functions are closer to home. Shorter supply chains reduce dependency risks and strengthen identity management, logging, and monitoring. Identity has become the primary attack vector; controlling it is central to resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Pendulum Is Moving<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The pendulum is not swinging backward, but toward a new equilibrium. Local legislation gains importance alongside global platforms. Incident response becomes strategic: how do we contain disruption within a single domain and prevent systemic ripple effects?<\/span><\/p>\n

Just as the cloud transition reshaped the channel around 2010, today\u2019s era demands expertise in digital resilience, sovereignty, and AI. AI agents\u2014the \u201capps\u201d of this decade\u2014will again redefine how we work.<\/span><\/p>\n
