Zijn stelling: <i>\u201cHet uiteenvallen van de vroegere Nederlanden is de grootste ramp die ons ooit is overkomen.\u201d<\/i> Een uitspraak die op het eerste gezicht provocerend klinkt, maar bij nadere beschouwing vooral een historische waarheid blootlegt.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Want of we nu kijken naar de Gouden Eeuw, of naar de periode na de Tweede Wereldoorlog: Nederland, Belgi\u00eb en Luxemburg vormden samen altijd een motor van handel, innovatie en samenwerking. De Benelux was de bakermat van de EEG, waar later de Europese Unie uit voortkwam. Het waren niet de Fransen of Duitsers die dat initiatief namen, maar de Lage Landen zelf.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>De kracht van de Lage Landen<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">De oude Nederlanden waren in de 17e eeuw een wereldmacht. Met de VOC en WIC beheersten ze wereldhandel, scheepvaart, industrie en financi\u00ebn. Een compact gebied met havens, koopmansgeest en innovatiekracht dat wereldwijd invloed uitoefende.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog herhaalden Nederland, Belgi\u00eb en Luxemburg dat kunstje opnieuw. De Benelux fungeerde als proeftuin voor de Europese Economische Gemeenschap (EEG). De kleine landen gaven de aanzet, waarna Duitsland, Frankrijk en Itali\u00eb zich aansloten. Het laat zien dat juist compacte, dynamische staten de katalysator kunnen zijn voor grote Europese samenwerking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Het moeras van Brussel<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sindsdien is de EEG uitgegroeid tot de Europese Unie \u2013 een log, technocratisch bouwwerk dat vooral regels produceert. Brussel regeert, maar mist de dynamiek die ooit de motor vormde. Ingenieurs willen vooral bouwen, juristen willen vooral alles stilleggen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">De Benelux lijkt verstrikt in dit Europese moeras. Maar misschien is het tijd voor een M\u00fcnchhausen-moment: onszelf, net als de baron in het sprookje, aan onze eigen haren uit dat moeras trekken. Niet door nostalgie, maar door visie. Het juridische haarkloven inwisselen voor de oude ingenieurs- en handelsgeest.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>EEG 2.0 \u2013 Commercie boven technocratie<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stel dat Nederland, Belgi\u00eb en Luxemburg opnieuw het initiatief nemen. Niet om een n\u00f3g groter Brussel op te tuigen, maar om een <b>EEG 2.0<\/b> te bouwen:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">niet op regels, structuren en ambtenarij,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">maar gebaseerd op handel, economie en innovatie<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Voorbeelden zijn er te over. Airbus ontstond niet uit Brusselse regelgeving, maar uit samenwerking tussen nationale bedrijven. Galileo, het Europese GPS, kwam voort uit de wens van enkele landen en bedrijven om onafhankelijk te worden van Amerika. Grote Europese projecten zijn nooit begonnen met een voorstel van een Eurocommissaris, maar met initiatief uit landen en ondernemingen. Dit kunnen we met Cloud en AI prima herhalen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Benelux is een groot Europees land<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">En de basis is er. Kijk naar de cijfers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>30 miljoen inwoners<\/b> \u2013 een populatie vergelijkbaar met de Scandinavische landen (Zweden, Denemarken, Noorwegen en Finland).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Economische omvang van bijna \u20ac1,9 biljoen<\/b> \u2013 goed voor de vierde of vijfde economie van Europa, na Duitsland, Frankrijk en het Verenigd Koninkrijk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Digitale koploper<\/b> \u2013 de Benelux behoort samen met Scandinavi\u00eb tot de meest digitale samenlevingen van Europa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Taal en cultuur<\/b> \u2013 met Nederlands en Vlaams delen de landen grotendeels dezelfde taal, wat samenwerking vergemakkelijkt.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Luxemburg voegt daaraan iets bijzonders toe. Het is niet alleen een financieel centrum, maar ook een hub voor ruimtevaart (SES), fintech en digitale infrastructuur. Combineer dat met de havens van Rotterdam en Antwerpen, Schiphol als vierde luchthaven van Europa en AMS-IX als een van de grootste internetknooppunten ter wereld \u2013 en de Benelux wordt letterlijk de draaischijf van goederen, kapitaal \u00e9n data. Nederland profileert zich bovendien als gasrotonde van Noordwest-Europa, met toegang tot mondiale LNG-markten, terwijl TenneT inmiddels een sleutelspeler is in de Europese elektriciteitsvoorziening, met een grensoverschrijdend net dat zich diep Duitsland in uitstrekt. Tel daarbij de kennisclusters in Nederland en Vlaanderen en je hebt de kern van een groot Europees land \u2013 compact, wendbaar en volledig ge\u00efntegreerd in de wereldeconomie.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>De Benelux als digitale en bevolkingskrachtpatser<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Met ongeveer 30 miljoen inwoners staat de Benelux als regio na Polen op de 9e plek in Europa, vergelijkbaar met de Scandinavische landen met ongeveer 28 miljoen inwoners. Compact, maar krachtig. Wat het nog indrukwekkender maakt, is dat de Benelux ook behoort tot de hoogst ontwikkelde digitale regio\u2019s van Europa, samen met Scandinavi\u00eb. Nederland en Luxemburg leiden in digitale infrastructuur, van AMS-IX, een van de grootste internetknooppunten ter wereld, tot geavanceerde e-government- en fintech-initiatieven. Dit unieke samenspel van bevolkingsomvang, economische slagkracht en digitale infrastructuur maakt de Benelux een natuurlijke kandidaat om als motor van nieuw Europees elan te fungeren.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Strategische trans-Atlantische positie<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nederland en Belgi\u00eb zijn daarnaast strategische NAVO A-klasse landen. Ze spreken goed Engels en onderhouden uitstekende diplomatieke en industri\u00eble banden met de Verenigde Staten.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Nederland:<\/b> actief in NAVO-operaties, met het F-35-onderhoud in Woensdrecht en een operationeel NAVO-hoofdkwartier in Brunssum.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Belgi\u00eb:<\/b> gastland voor het NAVO-hoofdkwartier in Brussel en met diverse militaire basisstructuren die bijdragen aan gezamenlijke defensiecapaciteit.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Deze combinatie van militaire, industri\u00eble en digitale kracht maakt de Benelux tot een belangrijke trans-Atlantische partner, die zowel diplomatiek als economisch en technologisch een sleutelrol speelt binnen Europa en de NAVO.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>De nieuwe zijderoutes<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In een wereld waarin China, India en de VS hun invloed uitbreiden via nieuwe zijderoutes, moet Europa zich heruitvinden. Grote, logge structuren verliezen aan slagkracht. Wendbare regio\u2019s winnen terrein.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">De Benelux kan daarin het verschil maken. Klein in oppervlakte, groot in economische, digitale en strategische kracht. Historisch bewezen als motor van samenwerking. En met een EEG 2.0 kan de Benelux opnieuw de draaischijf worden \u2013 dit keer niet alleen van handel en scheepvaart, maar ook van data, innovatie en digitale connectiviteit. Op die manier kan de Benelux het gestrande Europa weer vlot trekken, als motor die nieuw elan en richting brengt.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Conclusie<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">De geschiedenis laat zien dat de Lage Landen altijd sterker waren samen dan apart. Vandaag de dag is dat niet anders. Met 30 miljoen inwoners, een economie van bijna \u20ac2 biljoen, een digitale infrastructuur van wereldklasse en een strategische NAVO-positie vormt de Benelux feitelijk al een groot Europees land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">De uitdaging is om dat potentieel om te zetten in actie. Geen nieuwe Brusselse bureaucratie, maar een EEG 2.0: compact, dynamisch en commercieel gedreven. Zoals De Wever zei: het uiteenvallen van de Nederlanden was een ramp. His statement: <i>\u201cThe breakup of the former Netherlands was the greatest disaster that ever happened to us.\u201d<\/i> Provocative at first glance, but upon closer examination, a historical truth emerges.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Whether looking at the Golden Age or the post-World War II period, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg have always been engines of trade, innovation, and cooperation. The Benelux was the cradle of the EEC, later evolving into the European Union. It was the Low Countries, not France or Germany, that took the initiative.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>The Power of the Low Countries<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the 17th century, the old Netherlands were a global power. With the VOC and WIC, they controlled world trade, shipping, industry, and finance. A compact region with ports, entrepreneurial spirit, and innovative power exerting global influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After World War II, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg repeated this success. The Benelux served as a testbed for the European Economic Community (EEC). The small countries took the lead, followed by Germany, France, and Italy. This demonstrates that compact, dynamic states can catalyze large-scale European cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>The Brussels Swamp<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since then, the EEC has grown into the European Union \u2013 a cumbersome, technocratic structure focused on rules rather than results. Engineers want to build; lawyers want to halt everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Benelux seems trapped in this European swamp. Perhaps it is time for a M\u00fcnchhausen moment: pulling ourselves out of the swamp by our own hair, not through nostalgia but vision. Swapping legal hair-splitting for the old engineering spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>EEG 2.0 \u2013 Commerce over Technocracy<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Imagine the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg taking the initiative again, not to create a bigger Brussels, but to build an <b>EEC 2.0<\/b>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">based on trade, economy, and innovation,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">not rules, bureaucracy, and structures.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Examples abound: Airbus was created through national company cooperation, not EU regulations. Galileo, the European GPS, came from the desire of a few countries and companies to be independent from the U.S. Major European projects never started with a European Commission proposal but through initiative from countries and enterprises.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Benelux as a Large European Region<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The foundation is already there:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>30 million inhabitants<\/b> \u2013 comparable to the Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Economic size of nearly \u20ac1.9 trillion<\/b> \u2013 the fourth or fifth largest economy in Europe, after Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Digital leader<\/b> \u2013 the Netherlands and Luxembourg are among the most digitally advanced regions in Europe, alongside Scandinavia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Language and culture<\/b> \u2013 Dutch and Flemish are largely shared, facilitating cooperation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Luxembourg adds a unique dimension. Not only a financial hub, but also a center for space (SES), fintech, and digital infrastructure. Large, cumbersome structures lose momentum. Agile regions gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Benelux can make the difference. Small in area, but large in economic, digital, and strategic power. Historically proven as a cooperation engine. With an <b>EEC 2.0<\/b>, Benelux can once again become the pivot \u2013 not just for trade and shipping, but also for data, innovation, and digital connectivity. In this way, Benelux can pull stranded Europe forward as a motor of renewed momentum and direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">History shows the Low Countries have always been stronger together.
