Proloog \u2013 Het half-gesloten gordijn<\/span><\/h2>\n

Terugkijken vanuit de toekomst is een van de krachtigste oefeningen die een mens kan doen. Stel je voor dat we in 2035 zitten.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

De ochtend is koud en helder. In de Wieringermeer zoemt een kleine modulaire reactor. Een drone met kerstcadeaus stijgt geruisloos op uit Eindhoven. De elektriciteitsprijs: 5,8 eurocent per kWh \u2014 de laagste van Europa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vanuit die toekomst kijken we terug naar de winter van 2025. En dan schuift een gordijn open dat al jaren half gesloten was. Voor de goede kijker was het in L’heure bleu al zichtbaar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We zien nieuwe patronen. Verbanden. Keuzes. En vooral: gemiste kansen, verborgen onder de ruis van dagelijks debat, verkiezingscycli en morele verontwaardiging.<\/span><\/p>\n

In enkele weken gebeurde wat jaren stilstand niet lukte: de EV-markt stortte in, subsidies verdwenen, de cryptomarkt corrigeerde fictieve rijkdom, inflatoire druk nam af en koopkracht keerde terug. Belgi\u00eb weigerde Russische tegoeden bij Euroclear als oorlogskrediet te misbruiken. En precies tachtig jaar na 1945 publiceerde de nieuwe Amerikaanse regering haar National Security Strategy<\/em> \u2014 een document dat de wereldorde herschrijft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dit essay is geschreven vanuit die toekomstige blik<\/strong>, maar bedoeld voor het heden. Geen voorspelling. Een verkenning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dat is wat ik mijn leven lang heb gedaan.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Nederland werd groot door ketens, niet door grondstoffen<\/span><\/h3>\n

Nederland was nooit groot door omvang of brute macht. We hadden wind, water \u2014 en mensen die begrepen dat welvaart ontstaat door verbinden<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

De zaagmolen aan de Zaan halveerde tijd. De VOC voer op ketens: molens, werven, bankiers, verzekeraars en een overheid die die keten beschermde.<\/span><\/p>\n

Driehonderd jaar later bouwde Philips ecosystemen. Shell cre\u00eberde raffinageclusters. Fokker verbond universiteiten, toeleveranciers en productielijnen.<\/span><\/p>\n

En toen \u2014 ergens tussen 2000 en 2015 \u2014 vergaten we dat.<\/span><\/p>\n

We dachten dat welvaart een spreadsheet was. Dat je industrie kon uitbesteden en alleen diensten hoefde te houden.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dat we wel de topatleet wilden, maar niet zijn zweet.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

De geur van aluminium en bittere koffie<\/span><\/h3>\n

Hoe ik Fokker zag sterven<\/span><\/h4>\n

Ik heb het nog geroken: verspaand aluminium, kerosine, zweet en te sterke automatenkoffie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mijn vader werkte er. Ik liep er stage. Later bouwde ik als hoofd productie-ontwikkeling aan de fabriek van de toekomst voor de Fokker 50 en 100.<\/span><\/p>\n

Technisch superieur aan alles wat vloog. Nederlanders bouwden vliegtuigen van wereldklasse. En toch failliet in 1996.<\/span><\/p>\n

Niet door techniek. Niet door markt. Maar door politiek.<\/span><\/p>\n

Airbus was strategische prioriteit in vier landen. De Nederlandse overheid koos marktwerking: Fokker werd subcontractor. De keten werd toen al doorgeknipt. Partners houden elkaar ‘in de lucht’, subcontractors mogen failliet gaan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De laatste Fokker 50 verliet de lijn met bitterkoekjes en een begrafenisgevoel.<\/span>
Dit was geen industrieel falen. Dit was een politiek faillissement<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

De ketens die we n\u00edet verloren<\/span><\/h3>\n

Niet alles ging verloren.<\/span><\/p>\n

De landbouwketen bleef intact: van bodem en waterbeheer tot Wageningen, zaadveredeling en melkrobots. Vandaag springlevend \u2014 precisielandbouw, data-export, systeemverkoop.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dit is ketendenken in optima forma.<\/span><\/p>\n

En Tata Steel. We willen staal voor windmolens en bruggen, maar keuren het zweet af. Sluiten we het, dan exporteren we uitstoot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Een schoon geweten, maar zonder de last van industri\u00eble ketens.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Energie \u2013 De eerste keten van alles<\/span><\/h3>\n

Elke ambitie begint bij energie.<\/span><\/p>\n

AI draait op elektronen, niet op goede bedoelingen. Datacenters zijn geen grootverbruikers die energie verspillen \u2014 ze zijn<\/strong> de energiecentrales van de digitale economie, waar elektronen worden omgezet in informatie, productiviteit en waarde.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zonder constante, goedkope baseload: geen AI-training, geen soevereine cloud, geen digitale ketens.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2025 discussieerden we nog over windmolens als boetedoening en zonnepanelen als zonverering. Vanuit 2035 vragen we ons af waarom we een kenniseconomie draaiden op dure, intermittente energie en gedwongen import.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dat jaar kwam het kantelpunt: de private EV-markt stortte in, emissiedoelen werden versoepeld en het besef groeide dat welvaart productie vraagt \u2014 en soevereiniteit en autonomie. En het geloof in papieren academische modellen stortte in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Tachtig jaar na 1945 \u2013 De grote wending<\/span><\/h3>\n

In december 2025, precies tachtig jaar na het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, publiceerden de Verenigde Staten een nieuwe National Security Strategy<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Na decennia van Marshallhulp en NAVO-solidariteit erkent Amerika een nieuwe realiteit: Europa is niet langer het strategische middelpunt. Rusland is geen globale rivaal meer voor de VS. En Europa moet en kan zelf zijn broek wel ophouden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De blik van de VS draait naar China \u2014 en naar het Globale Zuiden: India, Indonesi\u00eb, de Arabische wereld en Zuid Amerika. Dit is geen breuk, maar een kantelpunt in de Fourth Turning<\/em>. Amerika kijkt naar het westen, nauwelijks meer naar het oosten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Op deze zijde van de aardbol ligt Europa heel klein in de linkerbovenhoek. Om vanuit daar contact te houden met het oosten, moeten oude zijderoutes terugkeren, maar nu digitaal: data-hubs, chipketens, energie-allianties. Europa moet voor zichzelf zorgen. En zorgen onderdeel van die ketens te zijn.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soevereiniteit is geen slogan meer. Het is noodzaak.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Van zand tot soevereiniteit<\/span><\/h3>\n

De nieuwe digitale keten<\/span><\/h4>\n

Data, rekenkracht en AI vormen de infrastructuur van de 21e eeuw. Nederland heeft ASML \u2014 uniek. Maar zonder waferfabs, chemicali\u00ebn en ontwerp blijft het een kroonjuweel zonder zetting. Een strategisch bezit zonder industri\u00eble verankering. Een losse parel, \u00a0terwijl we juist parelkettingen moeten rijgen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Datacenters zijn hierin de motor. Ze verwerken informatie op schaal en verdienen daarom prioriteit in energievoorziening<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Juist nu verscheen het Rapport-Wennink: 151\u2013187 miljard euro investeringen in digitalisering, fotonica, quantum en halfgeleiders. Geen subsidiefeestje, maar ketenpolitiek<\/strong>: advanced packaging in Nijmegen, fotonische chips via PhotonDelta, een AI-gigafabriek.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wennink waarschuwt: zonder productiviteitssprong en strategische autonomie kalft onze welvaart af. Dit is geen ivoren-torenadvies \u2014 dit is de blauwdruk voor een Digitale Airbus. Succesvolle samenwerking tussen Europese, nationale industrie. Gestuurd vanuit de marktbehoefte, niet vanuit de papieren werkelijkheid in Brussel.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2025 bouwen we datacenters als gunst aan Big Tech en praten we over AI als ethiek in plaats van productiemiddel. We hebben 15\u201320 GW baseload nodig \u2014 en nog geen 1 GW vergund.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dit is het moment voor ketenpolitiek.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

De menselijke keten<\/span><\/h3>\n

We missen 30.000 tech-ingenieurs. We leiden op voor verdwijnende banen en sturen talent weg.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leiderschap ontstaat op de fabrieksvloer \u2014 na nachtdiensten en mislukte projecten. Niet na een master Public Administration.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Epiloog \u2013 Daar begon het<\/span><\/h2>\n

Vijf uur \u2019s ochtends. Wieringermeer. 25 december 2035.<\/span>
De reactor zoemt zacht. Mijn koffieapparaat meldt dat de drone vertrekt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tien jaar geleden was dit sciencefiction. Vandaag is het realiteit.<\/span><\/p>\n

We smeedden ketens: een Digitale Airbus rond chips en AI, waferfabs in Groningen, kernenergie en SMR\u2019s, recyclebare batterijclusters, defensiedrones van eigen bodem met Nederlandse chips.<\/span><\/p>\n

We leerden van Fokker, Philips en ASML \u00e9n van de Amerikaanse pivot: politieke wil maakt techniek weeskind of winnaar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Energie werd levensbehoefte. De eerste 8.000 kWh voor elk huishouden belastingvrij. Vakonderwijs terug, in samenwerking met bedrijfsscholen. Ervaring gewaardeerd, praktisch werken weer betaald.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

En na jaren zelfkastijding durfden we weer trots te zijn. Geen berisping meer \u2014 erkenning: we zijn bouwers<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

De Fourth Turning is voorbij. We gebruikten de crisis als smidsvuur.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kerst 2025. Buiten koud, binnen licht. De molens aan de Zaan fluisteren dezelfde vraag als altijd:<\/span><\/p>\n

Wat verbindt dit met dat?<\/em> Wat voedt, versnelt en beschermt? Welke ketens geven meerwaarde?\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Denk in ketens. Nationale en globale ketens. De rest volgt vanzelf.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wanneer we in 2035 terugkijken, zeggen we niet:<\/span>
\u201cWe hadden het kunnen zien.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

We zeggen:<\/span>
\u201cDaar, in die koude winter van 2025 \u2014 begon het.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Fijne kerst, lezer.<\/span>

Prologue \u2013 The Half-Drawn Curtain<\/span><\/h2>\n

Looking back from the future is one of the most powerful exercises a human being can undertake. Imagine it is 2035.<\/span><\/p>\n

The morning is cold and clear. Somewhere in the Wieringermeer, a small modular reactor hums quietly. A drone carrying Christmas presents lifts off silently from Eindhoven. Electricity costs 5.8 eurocents per kilowatt-hour \u2014 the lowest price in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

From that future, we look back at the winter of 2025. And suddenly, a curtain opens that had been half-drawn for years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Patterns appear. Connections. Choices. And above all: missed opportunities, long hidden beneath the noise of daily debate, election cycles and moral outrage.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a single month, more changed than in years of stagnation. The EV market collapsed, subsidies vanished, the crypto market corrected years of fictitious wealth \u2014 false money drained from the economy. Inflationary pressure eased. Purchasing power returned to ordinary citizens. Belgium held firm, refusing to use Russian assets held at Euroclear as a line of credit for endless war financing \u2014 a sign of realism and restraint. And, exactly eighty years after 1945, the new U.S. administration published its National Security Strategy<\/em>, quietly rewriting the world order.<\/span><\/p>\n

This essay is written from that future perspective, but intended for the present.<\/span>
It is not a prediction. It is an exploration.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is what I have done all my life: explore the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The Netherlands Was Never Built on Resources \u2014 But on Chains<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Netherlands was never great because of size or brute force.<\/span>
We had wind, water \u2014 and a people who understood that prosperity emerges from connection<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sawmills along the Zaan River halved production time.<\/span>
The VOC sailed on chains: mills, shipyards, bankers, insurers and a state that protected the system as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three hundred years later, Philips built ecosystems. Shell developed refining clusters. Fokker connected universities, suppliers and production lines.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then \u2014 somewhere between 2000 and 2015 \u2014 we forgot.<\/span><\/p>\n

We convinced ourselves that prosperity lived in spreadsheets. That industry could be outsourced while services would suffice. That we wanted the athlete, but not the sweat.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The Smell of Aluminum and Bitter Coffee<\/span><\/h3>\n

How I Watched Fokker Die<\/span><\/h4>\n

I still remember the smell: freshly machined aluminum, kerosene, sweat, and over-extracted coffee from vending machines.<\/span><\/p>\n

My father worked there. I interned there. Later, as head of production development, I helped design the factory of the future for the Fokker 50 and 100.<\/span><\/p>\n

Technically superior to anything flying at the time. And yet bankrupt in 1996.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not because of technology. Not because of market failure. But because of politics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Airbus was a strategic priority for four nations. The Netherlands chose pure market logic. Fokker was reduced to a subcontractor. The chain was cut.<\/span><\/p>\n

The last Fokker 50 left the line accompanied by pastries and the feeling of a funeral. This was not an industrial failure. It was a political one<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The Chains We Did Not Lose<\/span><\/h3>\n

Not everything disappeared.<\/span><\/p>\n

The agricultural chain survived: from soil and water management to Wageningen University, seed breeding and milking robots. Today it thrives \u2014 precision agriculture, systems export, global relevance.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is chain thinking at its best.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then there is Tata Steel. We want steel for wind turbines and bridges, but reject the sweat that produces it. Close it, and we merely export emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n

We want clean conscience without the industrial chains.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Energy \u2013 The First Chain of Everything<\/span><\/h3>\n

Every ambition begins with energy.<\/span><\/p>\n

AI runs on electrons, not good intentions. Data centers are not wasteful energy consumers \u2014 they are<\/strong> the power plants of the digital economy, converting electrons into information, productivity and value.<\/span><\/p>\n

Without constant, affordable baseload power: no AI training, no sovereign cloud, no digital chains.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2025, we were still debating wind turbines as penance and solar panels as sun worship. From 2035, we ask ourselves why we tried to run a knowledge economy on intermittent energy and imports.<\/span><\/p>\n

That year marked the turning point. Private EV sales collapsed. Emission targets were relaxed. And a realization emerged: prosperity requires production \u2014 and sovereignty requires autonomy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Eighty Years After 1945 \u2013 The Great Pivot<\/span><\/h2>\n

In December 2025, exactly eighty years after the end of World War II, the United States released a new National Security Strategy<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

After decades of Marshall Aid, NATO and transatlantic solidarity, America acknowledged a new reality. Europe is no longer the strategic center of gravity. Russia is no longer a global rival to the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

The focus shifts westward \u2014 to China \u2014 and southward: India, Indonesia, the Arab world.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not a rupture, but a turning point in the Fourth Turning<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The old Silk Roads return, now digital: data hubs, semiconductor chains, energy alliances. Europe must take care of itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sovereignty is no longer rhetoric. It is necessity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

From Sand to Sovereignty<\/span><\/h3>\n

The New Digital Chain<\/span><\/h3>\n

Data, computing power and AI are the infrastructure of the 21st century.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Netherlands has ASML \u2014 unparalleled. But without wafer fabs, chemicals and design capacity, it is a pearl without a necklace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Data centers are the engine of this system. They process information at scale and therefore deserve priority access to energy<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

At this precise moment, the Wennink Report appeared:<\/span>
\u20ac151\u2013187 billion in investments in digitalization, photonics, quantum technologies and semiconductors. Not a subsidy binge, but chain policy<\/strong>: advanced packaging in Nijmegen, photonic chips via PhotonDelta, an AI gigafactory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wennink\u2019s warning is clear: without a productivity leap and strategic autonomy, our prosperity will erode. This is not ivory-tower advice \u2014 it is the blueprint for the Digital Airbus Europe needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2025, we built data centers as favors to Big Tech and debated AI as an ethical dilemma rather than a means of production. We need 15\u201320 GW of baseload power \u2014 yet less than 1 GW is permitted.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the moment for chain politics.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The Human Chain<\/span><\/h3>\n

We lack 30,000 tech engineers. We educate for disappearing jobs and drive talent away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leadership is forged on the factory floor \u2014 after night shifts and failed projects. Not in a Master\u2019s program in Public Administration.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Epilogue \u2013 That\u2019s Where It Began<\/span><\/h2>\n

Five o\u2019clock in the morning. Wieringermeer. December 25, 2035.<\/span>
The reactor hums softly. My coffee machine tells me the drone has departed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ten years ago, this was science fiction.<\/span>
Today, it is reality.<\/span><\/p>\n

We forged chains: a Digital Airbus around chips and AI, wafer fabs in Groningen, nuclear power and SMRs, battery clusters, defense drones powered by Dutch semiconductors.<\/span><\/p>\n

We learned from Fokker, Philips, ASMl and from the American pivot alike: political will turns technology into either an orphan or a champion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Energy became a basic necessity. The first 8,000 kWh tax-free for every household. Vocational education restored. Experience valued.<\/span><\/p>\n

And after years of self-flagellation \u2014 climate doom, energy panic, narratives of decline \u2014 we dared to offer compliments again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not reprimand, but recognition: we are builders<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Fourth Turning has passed. We used crisis as a forge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Christmas 2025. Cold outside, light within. The windmills along the Zaan whisper the same question they always have:<\/span><\/p>\n

What connects this to that?<\/em><\/span>
What feeds, accelerates and protects?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Think in chains.<\/span>
Everything else will follow.<\/span><\/p>\n

When we look back from 2035, we will not say:<\/span>
\u201cWe should have seen it coming.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

We will say:<\/span>
\u201cThere \u2014 in that cold winter of 2025 \u2014 it began.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
